Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night is celebrated in the UK on November 5th with parades, fireworks, bonfires and food, to commemorate a failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. Guy Fawkes was one of the conspirators who was caught, tried and executed. Today straw effigies of Fawkes are tossed into the bonfire as part of the celebration.
Each November 11th people in the UK observe a Two Minute Silence on Remembrance Day or Armistice Day, the day that marks the end of the First World War.

Lewis Carroll (1832–1898) is best known as the author of Alice in Wonderland. Alice is a little girl whose strange adventures parallel the journey from childhood to adulthood. Published in 1865, this British classic celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.

The word guy originally meant an ugly, repulsive person referring to the infamous Guy Fawkes. The straw effigies of Guy Fawkes were also known as guys. Over time the word guy began to be used to refer to a man (maybe as a half-meant insult) and is a word in common use today.
